Wins for Kabush and Sydor at Canadian Cyclocross National Championships

10/13/2009

With victories for Geoff Kabush and Alison Sydor, Maxxis-Rocky Mountain dominated the Canadian Cyclocross National Championships. The contest was held October 10 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Both riders were challenged by frigid temperatures and icy tracks. "It was so cold out there that it felt like my eyeballs froze a bit in the wind,” Kabush told canadiancyclist.com. “I was a little nervous with the snow and the slippery track, so I decided to get out in front fairly early and ride my own pace and avoid any crashes.  With the end of a long mountain bike season, I was a little nervous about how my form would hold, but I had a good week of rest after the Wisconsin [U.S. series] race, and I could tell that I was coming around for this weekend." Making steady progress through most of the first lap, Kabush grabbed the lead and held it for the remainder of the race.

Sydor took the lead in the third lap of the Women’s Elite race, holding the front position until she crossed the finish line. The Canadian rider has now won national titles in road, mountain bike and cyclocross. "On one of the steep climbs, I got a small gap on [another rider], so I just kept it going, widening it on the technical parts where I seemed to be stronger,” Sydor commented to canadiancylist.com.  “It's a real honor to have won now in three separate disciplines, especially when there is almost two decades between my first [national title] and this one."

Both Kabush and Sydor also won the next day’s Jim Horner Cyclocross Gran Prix, held in Edmonton. Kabush won both events in 2008.
